    Been a democratic country, India have been electing their government since 1951. The first party to win the India’s elections was Indian National congress and the elected prime minister was Jawaharlal Nehru.

    Elections takes place every 5 years in India for electing 545 members of Lok sabha (also known as Lower house of India). The elections won in the consequent elections of the year 2014 and 2019 was won by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Electing Shri Narendra Modi as prime minister. The current president of India is Ram Nath Kovind.

    The first main requirement of document for getting a voter ID in India is:

    • Passport size photograph – To ensure your identity once compared with other proofs.

    The second requirement of document for getting a voter ID in India is Address proof, which can be obtained from the following documents:

    • Bills such as gas bill, water bill, electricity bill.
    • Citizen cards such as Aadhar Card and ration card.
    • Residential proof such as Passport.
    Minimum age to place a vote and apply for voters ID in India

    The third requirement of document for getting a voter ID in India is age proof. Since, in 1988 the Sixty-first Amendment (act) the minimum age was reduced from 21 years old to 18 years old. The documents that may be required are:

    • Certificates such as 10th standard certificate and birth certificate.
    • Citizen cards such as Pan card, Aadhar card, Kisan card. 
    • Proofs such as Driving licence or copy of passport (which have birth year along with date mentioned clearly)

    Procedure to vote in India

    Step 1 – How to vote #India

    Once you have collected all the documents, we have to apply for voters ID. For this, you have to visit and login into the official website of Election commission of India – CLICK HERE.

    Step 2 – How to vote #India

    Once you have visited the website, scroll down and search for a drop down options where you can find the official website of 36 states and union territories. Select your state to proceed.

    Step 3 – How to vote #India

    Now, navigate to search for e-registration (in-case you are new user) and then click on form 6 (new user) and form 6A (overseas new user).

    For new users, you have to enter the basic information such as mobile number, email-ID, name and so on.

    Once you are done with registration, go to the login page and login into your account with the information you have provided before during registration for national voters service portal.

    Step 4 – How to vote #India

    Once you are done with logging into the national voters service portal. You have to accurately fill all the information asked for in the form 6 or form 6A. Attach a passport size photo that is asked for along in the form 6. Once, you have filled the form and submitted, then go to nearest “voter ID facilitation center” with the proofs and submit them. After submitting all the valid documents within few days, a government employee will knock your door to confirm your identification and ask for your signature or thumb print handing you the voters ID which will make you eligible to vote in the elections commenced.

    Alternative way to apply for voters ID and vote

    Visit the nearest mee-seva center or any other government sector that provides service to apply for government applications such as passport, aadhar card, licences or voters ID.

    After getting the voters ID, on the elections day you have to follow the following steps.

    Step 1A – How to vote #India

    Go to the nearest voting center or the one which you have applied for. After going, the room which you have to visit to place the vote will be mentioned on your voters ID slip (given by the government employee who came to hand over the voters ID). Move the room and stand in the queue (if any) and wait for your turn. Once you have entered (only one person allowed at a time, excluding the government employee), you have to submit your voters slip. A mark of ink impression is left on your finger to ensure that there aren’t any multiple votes placed by a single citizen. Then you have to go to the boot (covered all around) and search for the candidate and the party you are voting for. After a beep sound, you are done with the process of voting.

    After all the election process dates, the election commission is now made to manually count the slips of citizens voted and is compared to automatic technology. The candidate who have received the highest vote wins the elections for that particular zone. The national party with highest zones won in that particular state wins the state elections and the national party with highest national votes wins the national elections.
